What do you think the bead is made of?

I think it's some sort of shell. Looks like mother of pearl, but that (iridescent quality) didn't show up in the photo. The person that has this also found an arrowhead in the same creek. If you have any thoughts about this, I would be interested, as the area is under development. I was so excited to see the bead, I forgot to take a picture of the arrowhead, so I may go back out and do that. There are a few rock piles in the area and a purported Indian burial ground that I have yet to find.

I've not seen your blog in awhile, but I would definately have an archaeologist look at the bead.

Here is the latest update I have on the bead and also the arrowhead (which I did not photograph). The person who possesses the bead and arrowhead found out that the arrowhead is a projectile point. It is from the Archaic period and is early stage Brewerton and is made of Cherry Valley chert.

The bead is most likely decorative in nature. They were told it has a drilled biconical hole and has a mother of pearl look. The person that looked at these items (although he not a professional archeologist, I understand that he is a highly experienced amateur) thought the bead might be prehistoric.

The area where this was found had a lot of Indian activity. There was a very rare Jasper lancelet point that was found at the foot of a mountain near here, that is now in Hartwick College’s Yager Museum.
